In considering the summer tem-perature, it should be rememberedthat the climate of Southern Cali-fornia is so free from moisturethat, as stated, a temperature of100 degrees here is far more com-fortable than one of 80 degrees onthe Atlantic coast. This is provenby the fact that farm laborers con-tinue to work in the open fieldsduring the hottest periods, whilesunstroke is unknown. Again there are belts where peas,beans, tomatoes and other vegetables grow all through the winter,while, throughout the length and breadth of Los Angeles county, theheliotrope, geranium and jasmine blossoms shed their perfume fromthousands of gardens in mid-winter. The constant suction of theprevailing winds from the ocean during the day and to the oceanat night, prevents the possibility of malarial conditions.
