Macro image of Pincushion Protea flower
Macro image of Pincushion Protea (Leucospermum cordifolium) flower. Leucospermum cordifolium is a spreading shrub grows to about 2 m in diameter and about 1 to 1,5 m high. It has a single main stem with horizontally spreading stems. Up to 3 large inflorescences borne grows at the end on each stem. The inflorescences consist of many small flowers. It is the stiff protruding styles of the flowers which are the source of the common name "pincushion" for this genus. Only a few large, hard, nut-like seeds are produced by each inflorescence and these are collected by ants - the seeds germinate only after a fire in the plant's natural environment.
