Hawaiian island of Maui, satellite image. North is at top. The island consists of two volcanoes (right and left) joined by a narrow isthmus. The island's main city and port, Kahului, is the white area on the northern coast of the isthmus (upper left). The island of Kahoolawe is at lower left. The climate of Maui varies, with rainfall on the northern slopes of the volcanoes producing lush forests (green), while less rainfall on the southern slopes produces drier forests (grey/green). Fields are seen in the cultivated valley between the volcanoes. The area shown here is around 100 kilometres across. Image data obtained by a Landsat satellite.
