He became theowner of the old homestead in Saratoga, and reared a familyof eight children, named Peter M., William, Mary A.,Nathaniel, Jr., John, Nelson, Alzina, and Phebe Jane,—all now living except Mary and Nathaniel. Peter M., the eldest, was born at Northumberland, Sara-toga Co., Dec. 14, 1810. His youth was passed in attend-ing school and assisting on the home-farm.
