The Scala of Vradeto, a fantastic stone path, a real masterpiece of traditional engineering in Zagori region, Ioannina, Greece

The stone Skala of Vradeto was made with the traditional dry stone technique, known in Greek as xerolithia. We’ll never know the date of construction but it is believed that people of Zagori who lived as a courtiers of the Tsar, in the beginning of the 18th century, donated money to build the way to Vradeto. It is also mentioned that four tons of salt were used for the nutrition of workers. It is remarkable how so many stones were placed one over the other, in a length of over than 1500m spanning an altitude of 250 plus meters, to connect Vradeto and Kapesovo. The Skala of Vradeto is bigger than the three other routes (two at Koukouli and one at Vitsa). Thousands of trekkers visit our Skala every year!
