Land and peoples of the Kasai; being a narrative of a two years' journey among the cannibals of the equatorial forest and other savage tribes of the south-western Congo . d I had an opportunity of baggingspecimens of both a coal-black colobus and a cercopithecusmonkey; an opportunity which, to the disgust of myBushongo companions, I did not embrace, as I was not desirousof turning back with the noise of a shot any more importantbeast which might be approaching. Soon the beaters couldbe heard drawing nearer and nearer, and the rattles of thedogs could be distinguished as these animals darted hitherand thither in the dense undergrowth, occasionally (thoughvery rarely) giving vent to a short, sharp yelp. Suddenlysome shouting in the distance caused my companions toquiver with excitement as they told me that a pig (a redriver hog) had been seen by the beaters, and directed me tokeep a keen look-out for the animal, which, if all had gonewell, might be expected to come in our direction. Unfor-tunately, however, all had not gone well. The line ofbeaters converged upon the nets, driving nothing beforethem at all, for two pigs (the only animals seen) had broken.
