The Butter Market Canterbury, Kent, England

The butter market is situated in the Heart of Canterbury. It is directly opposite the Cathedral entrance and the pedestrianised court yard has served as focal point for the town for more than 800 years. The name "Butter Market" was adopted 200 years ago to replace the previous, and less desirable name "Bullstake", named after the practice of the baiting of bulls with dogs in belief that it tenderised their meat.
