Railroads tak-ing their rates from water transpor-tation will hurry the products fromthe land of King Cotton to the needsat the ends of the earth. The South will never again permitless than ten-cent cotton for anylength of time. It has the monop-oly and will hereafter control can fail to understand the bur-den of the cotton fields as to theSouth of to-morrow?. A SOUTHERN COTTON FIELD II. Atlanta There is no reason why Atlantashould be where it is rather than atany one of a hundred other placeswithin a radius of a hundred is seventy-five miles from a navi-gable river. There are no mineswithin a hundred miles and no othernatural advantages than its threeridges for good drainage and its 1050feet of altitude for good air. The people of the staid village ofDecatur did not want to have theirlives made miserable by the puff andtoot of the innovating locomotive,so they fought the coming of therailroad, and brought it to bay sevenmiles away; hence Terminal;later named Atlanta. There had to be a distributingcenter in this great South East, andAtlanta became that center. Itjest growd. But Topsy had an inward spirit that made her grow;so has Atlanta.
