Amongst my first recollections of such expressionsof interest was that of an old lady who, on hearingthat I had been living for five years on the AfricanEquator, drew me under the chandelier, and, aftera close inspection, exclaimed in an almost disappointedtone of voice, ^^ Why ! you are not black yet!
