When Andrew was fiveyears of age, his father accidentallylost his life while herorically endeavoring to save afriend from drowning. Until ten years of age, Andrewwas a ragged boy about the streets, supported by thelabor of his mother, who obtained her living withher own hands. He then, having never attended a school one day,and being unable either to read or write, was ap-prenticed to a tailor in his native town. A gentlemanwas in the habit of going to the tailors shop occasion-ally, and reading to the boys at work there. He oftenread from the speeches of distinguished British states-men. Andrew, who was
