His parents,belonging to the class of thepoor whites of the South, werein such circumstances, that theycould not confer even the slight-est advantages of education upontheir child. When Andrew was fiveyears of age, his father accidentallylost his life while herorically endeavoring to save afriend from drowning. Until ten years of age, Andrewwas a ragged boy about the streets, supported by thelabor of his mother, who obtained her living withher own hands. He then, having never attended a school one day,and being unable either to read or write, was ap-prenticed to a tailor in his native town. A gentlemanwas in the habit of going to the tailors shop occasion-ally, and reading to the boys at work there. He oftenread from the speeches of distinguished British states-men. Andrew, who was
