Argo Navis constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of Argo Navis (the Argo ship), with Latin text. This ship, in Greek legends, was sailed by Jason and the Argonauts on the quest of the Golden Fleece. It was a large constellation that has since been broken up to form the modern constellations of Carina (the Keel), Puppis (the Stern) and Vela (the Sail). The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up these constellations. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
