Moscow river and Cathedral of Christ the Savior (left), naval monument to Peter the Great (center). Red October confectionery factory (center, behind the monument). Moscow, Russia, on Thursday, August 28, 2014. The monument is 98 meters high, created by the sculptor Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate the 300 years of the Russian Navy. It weighs around 1000 tonnes and contains 600 tonnes of stainless steel, bronze, and copper. It is the eighth tallest and the tenth ugliest statue in the world. Malicious gossip has it that initially it was the statue of Christopher Columbus. The sculptor denies the gossip, but pants and shoes of the figure are in no way of the Russian or Northern European style of clothing
