Sunny view over vast expanse of dry sand beach, some way our from Fairhaven towards St Annes, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, UK

View of vast expanse of dry sand beach, some distance out from the coastline at Fairhaven, towards St Annes. The tidal range on the beach varies. A 7 metre high tide, rising from the River Ribble (left of shot), covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas of sand to dry out and blow in the wind. A 10 metre high tide, in contrast, will flood the beach and reach the coastline, leaving the beach wet at low tide. In the background of the view we see St Annes Pier, built between 1879 and 1885. The pier was devastated by fires in the 1970s and 1980s, that destroyed its famous pavilions. The seaward end was demolished, leaving the old steamer jetty isolated. The steamer jetty was used by paddle steamers using the North Channel of the River Ribble. Training and dredging of the channel of the River Ribble, so large ships could reach Preston Dock, caused the North Channel to silt up. The North Channel is visible on maps from the 1890s.
