Thisbe at the wall

A beautiful Babylonian maiden named Thisbe loved Pyramus, who lived next door, but their parents opposed their relationship. The lovers talked through a chink they found in the wall. The ancient Roman poet Ovid told their story in his "Metamorphoses." The English playwright Shakespeare told it in his "Midsummer's Night Dream. This engraving of Thisbe at the wall dates to 1884.
