This infrared image shows the dust ring around the nearby star HR 4796A, 237 light years from Earth in the constellation of Centaurus. This image was produced by the Spectro-Polarimetric High-Contrast Exoplanet Research (SPHERE) system, used at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). It was one of the first images produced by SPHERE in May 2014, showing the ring with great clarity, and also demonstrating the power of SPHERE to reduce the glare from very bright stars. This is key to this method of finding and studying exoplanets. HR 4796 is a binary system, with HR 4796A being the primary star. The ring is around 75 AU (astronomical units) in radius. Image released on 4 June 2014.
