He attains this by dividing the beats in the an-dante bar, No. 1, which pre- _ .cedes the entrance of theallegro in f, and by continu-ing to divide them; buttaking care to mark the di-vision more decidedly. Theplayers of the allegro in fthen comprehend that thetwo gestures of the conductorrepresent the two beats ofwhile the players of the andantetake these same gestures merely for a divided beatof their long bar. It will be seen that this is really quite simple,because the division of the short bar, and the subdivisions of the long one, mutuallycorrespond.
