This gravity latch is placed in operationby the movement of a cam, by means ofwhich the knuckle is released, not onlywith rapidity, but with such ease as to re-quire but little exertion, thereby enablingthe separating of cars while under tension,thus affording the greatest facility in. marshaling and arso tin.:; trans at ter-minals, as well as providing an expe-ditious method of detaching cars while inmotion, emergencies arise,wherebvsuch action become necessary forthe protection of life or property. The value of this feature is apparent inthe switching of cars on gravity tracks,where the separation must be accom-plished while trains are in motion, or elsebe attended with the loss of time incidentto checking or taking stock. On Southernroads, serious losses from fires in exposedcotton, while in transit, might in a greatmany instances be mitigated through theexpeditious means of separation affordedby this device.
