Someearly explorer, impressed with the huge, up-standing columns of rock and the mass ofbroken fragments heaped up at their base,called it the Devils Post-pile. This name,which has a crude fitness, was fixed by Con-gress when it created this formation theDevils Post-pile National Monument, on July6, 1911. He now has title toquantities of gardens all over the country;several lakes and rivers; a whole ridge inTexas; a tower in Wyoming; a causeway inColorado; a slide and a gate in Utah; the post-pile and a gulch in California; an inkstandand a kitchen in Yellowstone Park; and upin Idaho he has gone into partnership withsix other friends and filed on the Seven DevilsMountains, along Snake River. Originally the causeway, the cave, and thispost-pile were lava flows of considerablethickness. As these masses of molten rockcooled, they separated into hundreds of thou-sands of columns by the forces of columns were mostly six sided, andstood roughly perpendicular to the surface ofthe ground. They are not crystals in anysense of the word. The Palisades of the Hud-son and the Rhine are of similar origin, asare other palisade formations all over the world.
