At the closeof his term as district attorney he was elected to theassembly and served there in 1850 and 1851. In1857 he was elected to the state senate where heserved until 1859. Two years later Ije was in Wash-ington as a member of the thirty-seventh congress. He remainedin Washington during the term ofthat congress and then retired toprivate life and held no otherofficial position until his electionto the forty-first congress, afterwhich he was in the house ofrepresentatives continuously un-til 1877. In the meantime, had other appointmentsof a business or private character,involving a great many importanttrusts, being one of the commis-sioners of the state parks, com-missioner of the state survey; andfor some time cashier of the Ma-lone bank. He was also memberof the board of trustees for themanagement of the bankruptNorthern Railroad, afterward theOgdensburg and Lake Champlainroad.
