DAHW is supporting the leprosy control work of the Brazilian health system in Mato Grosso, in its 33 most affected cities, covering a total population of million people. In 2009 more than 2,700 new leprosy cases were registered in Mato Grosso, making the incidence rate in this region one of the highest in the world. Among the new patients, 147 were less than 15 years old, which suggests that infection continues undiminished. In the past year, DAHW contributed 90,860 Euros to the leprosy control programme in Mato Grosso. When combined with the funds of other ILEP partners a total of 122,860 Euros were available.
