The mummified remains of a once trapped domestic cat inside Maiden Law Hospital Mortuary, Lanchester, County Durham, UK

Maiden Law's construction started in 1939 but with the outbreak of WWII work didn't finish until 1945. It was built as an Infectious Diseases Hospital. With the advances of modern medicine. Over a period of time building became surplus to requirements and Maiden Law was closed in phases from the 1980s until the early 1990s The hospital now stands derelict except for Willow-burn Hospice which opened within the site in 1989. The closed sections are now part of the Hospital Sites Program which was inherited by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) from English Partnerships. An outline Planning Permission for 47 homes was granted in 2012 Rumored for work to start in 2015, the site still stands and demolition will only be a matter of time. Maiden Law Mortuary is a small building which has been largely untouched since its closure. What makes the site so interesting is the porcelain autopsy table as these pieces of medical history are now becoming very rare, as modern hospitals prefer the shiny stainless steel tables instead.
