Yoruk Family On Balcony
The Yörüks (also Yuruks or Yorouks) are a Turkish ethnic population who live in the Eastern part of Macedonia, concentrated mostly in the mountainous areas of Dojran - Valandovo and Radoviš – Štip. Yörüks are referred to as nomadic tribes of Turkmen origin who emigrated from the steppes of Central Asia to Anatolia, and from there in several waves settled in the eastern part of the Balkans, starting in the 14th century. They are now around 5,000 Yoruks in Macedonia, living in small villages and perpetuating their traditions. As in individual Turkish ethnic group in Macedonia, the Yoruks are distinguished by their language, customs and folkloric particularities. The contradiction between the traditional and the contemporary way of life is reflected in the contrast between male and female Yoruks. Women wear their colourful and archaic traditional gowns, and their means of communications are limited, mostly due to the language barrier (almost without exception, the female population only speaks Turkish). Men, meanwhile, adopted a modern behaviour, dress Western-style and use mobile phones.
