This 1902 illustration shows the sinking of the 100-gun British vessel called the Royal George. It sank at Spithead, England, in 1782, and many crew members were lost. In August of 1782, it was to sail to Gibraltar, under Captain Kempenfelt. The vessel was at dock, titled a bit to allow for repairs and goods were also being put aboard. The tilt came to be too much and the guns broke loose (some say they had not been securely fastened) and before an alarm could sound, it rolled to its side and sank - taking with it about hundreds of people, some of which were women and children who had come to see and visit the vessel.
