Apianus on the comet of 1531. Description of the comet of 1531 from Astronomicum Caesareum (1540), a book published by the German astronomer Petrus Apianus (1495-1552). The comet of 1531 is better known as Halley's Comet. The page consists of five sets of Latin text with diagrams describing how to locate an object, such as a comet, in the night sky. Apianus, the court astronomer to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, discovered that the tails of comets always point away from the Sun. He was the first to publish drawings showing this.
