castle erected Moorish builders in mid-15th century Bishop Alfonso Fonseca archbishop Seville lord Coca Alaejos mixture

The castle was erected by Moorish builders in the mid-15th century for Bishop Alfonso Fonseca, archbishop of Seville and lord of Coca and Alaejos. It is a mixture of Moorish and military architecture. It is built entirely of brick, the material characteristic of the Mudejar style, laid in decorative patterns. It has a square ground plan, a moat and three walled enclosures. At the corners of the walls, are massive polygonal towers, which in turn have defensive turrets. The central structure of the castle also has tall polygonal corner towers and round towers along the sides. The interior is very luxurious and lavish and maintains its Mudejar decoration.
