Snowmaking machines at Loon Mountain ski area during the first month of the 2022/23 ski season at the Loon Mountain Ski area in the White Mountain National Forest near Lincoln, New Hampshire. Loon Mountain ski area is 133 miles (215 k) North of Boston, Massachusetts on the American East Coast. Loon opened for skiing with mostly artificial snow during the last week of November 2022. The resort started in 1966 with a summit elevation of 3050 feet (.93 k) and now includes 11 lifts servicing 370 acres (150 Hectors) of skiable area that is 99% covered by modern snow making equipment. Climate scientists have found that the ski season in the United States has decreased by 34 days and snow cover has dropped by an average of 41% from 1982 to 2016. According to climate scientists, climate change could lead to a 50% decline in overall snowfall in the American Northeast by 2050.
