The hills should be previously prepared by mixing thorough- ly with the soil of each a shovelful of well rotted manure. When all danger from insects is past, thin out the plants, leaving three or four of the strongest to each hill. The fruit should be gath- ered when large enough, whether required for use or not, as if left to ripen on the vines, it destroys their productiveness. For pickles, plant from June to middle of July. When small sprinkle the plants, when the dew is on, with ashes or air- slacked lime to protect them from bugs. One pound is sufficient for an acre. THE KLONDIKE. See Novelties. LEMON.
