Original and clear WW1 era group outdoors portrait of textile mill girls at Clays Mill. They are either mill operators wearing their Sunday best or office staff. Many different blouses and skirt fashions of the period. Three of the girls are wearing badges, possibly the company's 'on war service' ones. The girls are working in manufacturing - possibly woollens or cotton textiles. Clay's Mill, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, circa 1915 ,1916

The length of the girls skirt on the far right dates the photo to circa 1915 or 1916. After 1916 hemlines dropped again and didn't rise until the 1920's. Clays Mill is written on the revers of this postcard. More research needed on this photo. It is not known whether Clays mill refers to Clay Pits Mill of which there are records or named from the mill belonging to James Clay, a woollen manufacturer. It is almost certainly a textile mill. Halifax is a minster town, in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The town is known as a centre of woollen manufacture from the 15th century onward, originally dealing through the Piece Hall. The town's 19th-century wealth came from the cotton, wool and carpet industries and like most other Yorkshire towns had it had a large number of weaving mills many of which have been lost or converted to alternate use.
