Cows of this breedhave been reported as producing as much as 122^^ pounds of milkper day. At the St. Louis Fair in 1904, fifteen Holstein-Friesiancows were entered in competition with Jerseys and other were milked for 120 days and averaged pounds each good Holstein-Friesian cow will produce six or seven thousandpounds of milk each year, if she is given proper care and treatment. Like the Jersey, they derive their name fromthe island on which they originated, which is another of the islands inthe British Channel. Members of this breed have larger frames thanthe Jerseys. They also have more vigorous constitutions and average1,050 pounds in weight. They are good milkers and their milk is ofa superior quality which tests well. This breed produces a butterfat which is distinctively yellow. In fact some of the butter producedfrom the milk of Guernsey cows and exhibited at a dairy conventionwas so yellow that it was believed by the judges to contain coloringmatter.
