This magnificent antelope, which comes next in point of size tothe eland and kudu, was long considered a member of the bushbuckgroup, with which it agrees in the general type of colouring. Itdiffers, however, in that the tail is tufted (like that of an eland), andalso by the presence of horns in both sexes. The general colour of thecoat is bright chestnut-red, marked with a number of narrow verticalwhite stripes, a white crescent on the breast, a white chevron on theforehead, two white spots below each eye, and some white marks onthe legs ; the front of the face being brown, with a tawny patch roundeach eye. In old bulls the coat becomes mahogany-colour. Thereis no dewlap, throat-fringe, or frontal tuft, and the hair is short. Theworn tips of the horns are yellow. Height, about 4 feet. Distribution.—West Africa, from Liberia, through Fanti to theAshkankolu Mountains, the Gabun, and Sierra Leone, and thence 324 RECORDS OF BIG GAME throu
