Equanil (meprobamate), 200 mg tablets. Meprobamate is used to treat anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. Meprobamate is a tranquilizer, a type of depressant. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow for relaxation. A depressant is a drug that depresses the function or activity of a specific part of the brain. Effects include anxiolysis, pain relief, sedation or somnolence, cognitive/memory impairment, as well as in some instances euphoria, dissociation, muscle relaxation, lowered blood pressure or heart rate, respiratory depression, and anticonvulsant effects; complete anesthesia or death at can result at high doses.
