Bortezomib cancer drug. Computer model of a molecule of the cancer drug bortezomib. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (yellow), hydrogen (white), oxygen (purple), nitrogen (green) and boron (red). This drug, which is marketed as Velcade, is used to treat a type of cancer known as myeloma. Myeloma is a cancer of blood plasma cells found in bone marrow, and can spread to cause multiple cancers in different areas of the body. Bortezomib belongs to a class of drugs, called proteasome inhibitors, that help to prevent the cancers that result from protein breakdowns. Approval was granted in the USA in 2003 and in Europe in 2004.
