Domes of St. Sophia's Cathedral (1045-1050) in Novgorod Veliky (Russia)
St Sophia's Cathedral was built between 1045 and 1050. It is one of the earliest stone structures of northern Russia. Its is 38 meters high (it was taller originally, but for the past 9 centuries its lower part was concealed by 2 meters thick cultural layer). The cathedral was built by Prince Vladimir, the son of Yaroslav the Wise, and until the 1130s this principal church of the city also served as the sepulchre of Novgorodian princes. St Sophia became symbol of power and independence of Novgorod.
