A young Togolese woman poses in the Tamberma Valley with traditional castles of the region in the background.

The Tamberma Valley is in northern Togo. Besides the natural beauty of the location, it is unique due to the traditional castles built by the locals of the region. The castles were initially built in the 17th century in defense of Benin's Dahomeyan kings that would take the local people to sell as slaves. With their small, easily defendable doors and sleeping quarters on the roof, it was easier to protect themselves.
