FETAL GROWTH
In women, duration of pregnancy is nine months. The uterus distends progressively during the first trimester of pregnancy. The fetus measures 12 cm at three months. Organ formation is well advanced and the face has recognizable features. At six months, certain organs begin functioning (digestive tract). The fetus measures about 36 cm and weighs 1 kg. Hair and nails grow. Fetal growth is completed at nine months. Normally, the head of the fetus presents for delivery. At birth, the baby weighs about 3 kg and measures 50 cm.
