Lauderdale Station Miss April 15 ? 1864 My dear Major I was greatly rejoiced to day ? when on opening a letter I found it to be from my old friend [and] fellow comrade ? Wright C. Schaumburg. This is the first [and] only letter I have ever received from you. I had not forgotten nor neglected you for I always inquired specially after you every time I have Seen any one from your Dept. During the Series of the battles around Vicksburg and its Siege we were completely isolated from all portions of the Confederacy and almost lost Sight of all our old friends [and] acquaintances. Immediately after leaving Vicksburg after the Capitulation we were Stationed at Demopolis Ala on the Lou Bigbee River ? And were So far from the Father of waters ? that we could Scarcely hear from the your Department. I have a brother in your Dept. from whom I have heard only once Since the Siege of Vicksburg. I have So much to write to you that I can not possible compress it into one letter ? And Scarcely know what selections to make. We have hoped through many bloody [and] trying Scenes Since you [de?]parted from us. And our ranks are greatly decimated. Title: Unsigned letter of a Confederate soldier, Headquarters, Missouri Brigade, Lauderdale Station, Miss., to Wright C. Schaumburg, April 15, 1864 . 15 April 1864.
