Trans., 1854) has adopted19 218 HYPERTROPHIES AND DEGENERATIONS. the latter derivation, and has described two forms of diseasewhich he calls the keloid of Alibert, and true is room to doubt whether these affections are distinctdiseases, or mere varieties of one disease. The keloid of Ali-bert first appears in the form of small, hard, shining tubercles, Fta. Keloid tumors. roundish, oval, or quadrilateral, somewhat firmly set, of adusky or deep red color, and generally attended with itching,pricking, shooting, or dragging pain in the part. These tubercular elevations slowly increase in size untilthey attain a height of two or three lines, and comprise anarea varying from that of a horse-bean to that of an almond. KELOID OF ALIBERT. 219 The tubercles often become pale on their summits, and some-what glistening. They are hard, firm, and elastic, like fibro-cartilage; after a while they become broader, more irregular,and occasionally depressed in the centre. Some delicatewhitish tendinous-looking lines with minute bloodvessels areobserved on the surface of the swellings. Each separateswelling extends by tapering claw-like processes, from aquarter of an inch to an inch in length, which appear tocause a puckering of the skin.
