The vascular architecture of the liver. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a cast showing the vascular arrangement of the liver. Casts are made by injecting an unpolymerised mixture into the vascular system and allowing it to harden within the vessels. Digestion of the tissue with hydrogen peroxide leaves a replica of the vessels. The largest vessel seen here is the hepatic portal vein from which arises the dense network of smaller liver capillaries, also known as sinusoids. Capillaries also arise from the hepatic artery (red) which is smaller in diameter than the portal vein. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size.
