A distinct personalityamong Italian etchers isGiovanni Benedetto Castiglione (born at Genoa 1616, diedat Mantua 1670). While living at Genoa he came intocontact with Van Dyck, and as a result based his styleon that of the northern etchers. In his biblical andmythological compositions he imitated Rubens, and alsoexecuted a series of studies of male heads in themanner of Rembrandt.
