Detail of the Brabo Fountain at the Market Place in Antwerp, Belgium

The Brabo fountain which was conceived by Jef Lambeaux in 1887 stands in the middle of the Market Place (Grote Markt) in Antwerp. It represents the legendary Roman centurion Silvius Brabo who, after having slain the giant Antigoon, throws his hand into the river Scheldt. Popular etymology has it, that Antwerp (Antwerpen) derives its name thereof "throw" in Dutch is "werpen" and "hand" is "hand"; therefore "handwerpen" (to throw a hand) would be the origin of "Antwerp". In the background one can see various types of guildhalls, some dating back as far as the 16th century.
