The shear, which stands at an angle of 45 degs. withthe center lines of the plow, is mounted on a 12-in. channel-iron, backed up by 4-in. pine plank. The plank in turn is 328 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XXIII. No. 9. fastened to two 5-in. T-rails. These T-rails slide in a cast-ironguide at top and bottom, which prevents cramping. The shearis raised by two ^s-in. chains, fastened at either end of the4-in. plank. The chains pass over pulleys and enter the cab,where they are wound on a 2-in. shaft, this shaft being oper-ated by a worm and gear which enables the operator to easilyraise the shear, and forming a self-locking device. The lower-ing of the shear is accomplished by simply loosening up thechain, the weight of the shear beingsufficient to lower it. The shear isdesigned so that it can be raised 6 the rail.
