It is undoubtedly the most brilliant and musicianly of all Verdis concertedpieces, and the contrasting emotions—the tender addresses and coquetry on the one side,and the heart-broken sobs of Gilda and the cries for vengeance of her father on the other—are pictured with the hand of a genius. The situation at the opening of the act is a most dramatic one. The Duke, gay andcareless, is making love to Maddalena, all unconscious that the assassin hired by Rigolettois waiting for his opportunity.
