A BTO-trained bird ringer carefully puts a numbered ring on the leg of a house sparrow (passer domesticus)
A bird ringer attaches a ring to a house sparrow's leg. This scientific work is done by volunteers working for the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) in order to track birds' movements and find out more about breeding and survival, habits, lifespan etc. This helps to direct conservation efforts. NOTE: Bird ringing in the UK can only be done under licence through the BTO
