Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Light micrograph of blood cells in a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), also called X-type histiocytosis. Hystiocytosis is an excess number of histiocytes, cells that form an important part of the immune system, specifically the cells engaged in phagocytosis (engulfing and destroying foreign particles and pathogens). A histiocyte is at centre. The pale orange cells are red blood cells. In LCH, the histocytes move into bones, causing damage in the form of lesions. This sample was obtained by a puncture on a scapular mass.
