General view of the Gateshead Quayside seen over River Tyne from the East Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, England UK

Showing the Baltic Arts Centre the Sage Music Centre and Gateshead Millennium Bridge and other River Tyne Bridges. Baltic Flour Mills were commenced in 1930s, though the Second World War resulted them not being completed until 1950. They closed in 1982 and stood derelict until converted to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, which opened 13 July 2002 (Architect Dominic Williams of Ellis Williams). Gateshead Millennium Bridge opened 17 September 2001 and is the world's first tilting bridge, opening like a giant eyelid to form an arch (Total span is 413 feet (126 metres) and height is 164 feet (50 metres)). The 850 tonne structure tilts on pivots on each side of the river powered by 8 electric motors totalling 440 kilowatts or 589 horse power. An opening or closing takes four minutes and the energy efficient design results in it only costing £ each time it opens. It is purpose built for pedestrians and cyclists and connects two cross country riverside cycleways, which are part of a national network Cost £22 million.
