To overcome thedifficulty of forcing the cement well into the seam, the deviceillustrated in Fig. 2 was put in place in the first hole (No. 1,Fig. 1); the bored hole of the bolt was filled with the cement, which was then forced into the interior with the iron piston, 32 REPAIRING LEAKY Fig. 2.—Apparatus for forcingin the Cement. A (Fig. 2), some cement coming out at B. The same operation was carried out at holes Nos. 2 and 3 (Fig. 1), and so on, with the same bolt-pump. When the rivets were ready and duly heated, they were riveted in the usual way. It is convenient, in the caseof a highly corroded plate, touse a special rivet, as shown inFig. 3. The seam is filled withcement with the bolt-pump, asdescribed, and then riveted withthe special rivets. When stillhot, some cement is forcedthrough the bored rivets withthe iron piston, as explainedbefore. The pressure on the above-mentioned boiler is 160 poundsper square inch, and sinceSmooth-on cement was used ithas run for over two monthswithout any signs of leak.
