Aerodynamic forces in flight. Diagram showing the forces that act on an aeroplane in flight when turning flight. During a turn in level flight, the total lift of the wing may be considered as two components. The vertical component opposes the weight of the aircraft, the horizontal component supplies the centripetal force that 'pulls' the aircraft into the turn. The normal reaction to this is an apparent centrifugal force, experienced by the pilot as 'g-force'. In extremely tight turns at high speed, the pilot may experience an apparent centrifugal force of eight or more times the force of gravity (8g or more).
