The capacity of the storage space available to a machineof this character is approximately 500,000 feet, log scale. Locomotive cranes 1 are used at some plants which purchase logsthat are delivered at the mill by trunk-line railroads. These cranesare used not only to unload the logs from the cars and to deck them, but also to take the logs from the piles and place them on the jackerchain. 1 Fig. Fig. 6.—A Portable Log Unloader and Stackerfor Hardwood Operations. 16 LOG STORAGE WATER STORAGEStorage Areas.
