Powis Street in Toxteth in Liverpool 8 known as The Welsh Streets due to the streets being named after towns in Wales. The houses were compulsory purchased with a view to demolishing the houses and building modern housing. Richard Starkey, known worldwide as Ringo Starr the drummer in the Beatles lived in the area as a child ( 9 Madryn Street ). Beatle fans worldwide protested at the destruction of the Welsh Streets and the area has been left in limbo for years until the houses are in such a state of decay, demolition will be inevitable.
