Valle Crucis Abbey seen from road, Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales. Ruined medieval Cistertian abbey
Valle Crucis Abbey seen from road, Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales. Name means 'Valley of the Cross' after Eliseg’s Pillar, situated a little to north. Founded 12 January 1201 by Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor, ruler of Welsh principality of Powys, with 13 Cistercian monks & several lay-brothers from Strata Marcella, nr Welshpool. He was the Great Grandfather of Owain Glyndwr in whose uprising the abbey was destroyed by fire. Dissolved 1538. A modern pilgrimage from Vale Crucis to Llangollen church echoes the St Garmon pilgrimages. In Elizabethan times the east range was converted to a dwelling-house and in later times used as a farmhouse.
